Lymph friendly bras

Tips for choosing an everyday bra if you are managing lymphoedema

Go back

If you're managing lymphoedema, it's important to choose an everyday bra that is comfortable & supportive.

Please note, if you require a compression bra to manage lymphoedema in the breast, chest or thorax, please consult your lymph therapist.

Comfort & support are key when choosing an everyday bra. And if you're managing lymphoedema symptoms, it's also important to find a bra that won't disrupt your lymphatic flow.

Here are some features to look for in an everyday bra that's 'lymph friendly:

Wider Straps

Remember, bra straps are designed to carry 20% of the breast weight. Choose a wider strap so that this weight is spread over a greater area & doesn't create a pinch point. A padded strap can also be a good option, to provide extra comfort for your shoulders.

Higher back & sides

Good coverage of the torso is important, especially under the arms. If you've had lymph nodes removed under the arm, or have reduced sensation in that area, avoid styles that dig into the skin.

Wider underbust band

The underbust band needs to support 80% of the breast weight, having a wider band distributes this weight over a broader area so as not to disrupt lymphatic flow.

Seamless or flat seams

Look for a bra that is seamless or made with very flat seams, you want to make sure the bra is sitting smoothly on your skin. Bulky seams can cause irritation to your skin or disrupt lymphatic drainage.

If you have limited mobility in your arms & shoulders, a front opening style may also make it easier to put the bra on.
