Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, with 2 million new cases worldwide each year. In the course of their lives, an average of one in eight women will develop breast cancer. Statistically, most are diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 60. Thanks to early diagnostics, advanced treatment options and surgical interventions, the 5-year survival rate is now 90%. However, a breast cancer diagnosis brings much change to a woman’s life.
A diagnosis is usually followed by surgical removal of the tumour and, if necessary, the affected lymph nodes. Today, about 70% of women undergo breast-conserving surgery (or lumpectomy); in about 30% of cases, the entire breast is removed (mastectomy). In 40-60% of cases, women who have had breast-conserving surgery have a second operation. This may be because of a recurrence of symptoms, or because the visual result is not satisfactory.
After surgery and follow-up treatment, some women experience side effects – for example, lymphoedema.
At Amoena, our goal is to develop and offer products that improve the quality of life for all women affected by breast cancer at every step of their journey.
