Managing Lymphoedema After Breast Cancer: A Real-Life Journey with Lasting Relief

Managing lymphoedema—a chronic condition involving fluid build-up due to damaged lymph nodes—is a common and often unexpected side effect following breast cancer surgery or radiotherapy. Around one in five women will experience it, according to Cancer Research UK. Symptoms such as swelling, tightness, heaviness, or dry skin can affect the arm, hand, breast, or chest. While early identification is key, diagnosis and treatment can be delayed, leaving many women struggling to find relief.

This was the case for Penny Orme, who shares her experience in managing lymphoedema after her lumpectomy and radiotherapy.

Early Signs and Challenges of Managing Lymphoedema

After her lumpectomy, Penny began radiotherapy. That’s when she noticed an uncomfortable, swollen feeling in her breast. “I thought I’d been through the worst,” she recalls. Her consultant referred her to a lymphoedema clinic, but she had to wait months for an appointment. A physiotherapist later confirmed that radiotherapy had likely caused damage to her lymph nodes, resulting in lymphoedema. She was taught how to massage the area, use a dimpled foam insert in her bra, and experiment with tape for lymph drainage. Despite allergic reactions to some tapes, Penny persisted and even performed daily self-massage to manage symptoms.

Searching for Better Solutions

Still struggling, Penny sought help from massage therapy. A lymphatic drainage specialist was able to reduce the fluid build-up temporarily, but the relief was short-lived. Compression garments were suggested, but Penny was hesitant—they felt unnecessary and cumbersome, especially since they were designed for both breasts.

Then, during a visit to the Amoena showroom in April 2024, everything changed.

The Game-Changer: Amoena Lymph Flow Breast Shell

While shopping for a new bra, Penny discovered the Amoena Lymph Flow Breast Shell—a soft, medical-grade silicone insert designed for gentle, targeted compression. Its textured surface provides a light massage effect to stimulate lymph drainage and loosen fibrotic tissue. Washable, reusable, and customizable to fit, the shell proved to be a turning point in Penny’s journey to managing lymphoedema.

“I no longer had to deal with foam inserts or tape,” she says. “The shell was easy to use, even in warm weather during a trip to France. It didn’t become sticky or uncomfortable.”

Consistent Routine, Noticeable Results

Back home, Penny combined daily 15-minute massage sessions with shell usage during the day and fortnightly drainage therapy. Over the summer and autumn, she noticed a significant reduction in swelling. Her physiotherapist confirmed the improvement.

By following a consistent routine—massage, therapy, and the Amoena Breast Shell—Penny effectively managed her lymphoedema. “The swelling in my breast is visibly reduced,” she shares. “I’ve even had to trim the shell down as my needs changed.”

Empowerment Through Awareness and Innovation

Today, Penny continues her lymphoedema management routine and proudly shares her success with others. She has even encouraged her physiotherapist to recommend the shell to other patients.

“For me, the results speak for themselves. I work hard to manage my lymphoedema, but thanks to the breast shell, that effort isn’t wasted. Life can go on as normal.”

Her message is one of hope and gratitude: Thank you, Amoena, for designing a product that makes such a difference. I’m not just pleased—I’m thrilled.”
